The Rest Is Easy

Verse 1:
Well the day was Independence Day, and the parade was passing us by.
We were standing near the end and we were always standing there side by side.
I looked at the flag boy’s face and when I turned she was looking at mine.
And that was the first time I ever noticed she weren’t just pigtails, balls, and twine.
Thinking back, well I can still recall the time her daddy came to town.
But then he up and left one day, and she took it hard, so I tried to ease her down.
And I got roasted that summer for letting a girl join the Sacred Crowd.
Even though they all knew she could fish and frog better’n most of the boys around.
Snapping back to the parade grounds, as today’s celebration waned,
I felt her hands probing my restraints and the last fleeting gasp of my childhood fade.
She took me behind Low’s barn and she taught me a brand new game.
Right then and there I forgot about the Sacred Crowd (and damn near everything).
Chorus:
And she told me ‘bout her dreams untold, angels of gold, and castles that float to the sky.
And she said, “In this world if you believe in yourself, well that’s all that you need to get by.
Cause the rest is easy enough, it’s like falling in love.
Just open your wings and fly high ... so high.”
Verse 2:
Laying out behind Low’s barn, I thought the world was a holy place.
Wild weed there between my teeth and the glory of love shining down from her face.
But then up round the corner come Mr. Low with a 16 gauge
And a rapt misappreciation for my moment of coming of age.
Well things just went from bad to worse and what I recall, Lord I’d rather not.
Me there scramblin’ for my shorts and shame, and Low and his gun on the phone with the cops.
I lied and told him we had fallen in love and when she smiled, I did on the spot.
But he said, “There’s a kind of justice here, and it sways with what we got!”

Verse 3:
They took us down to the station on the pretense of pending arrest.
Her they held in captivity, and me in suspense wondering what to do next.
I told the sheriff about my Bill of Rights, but with his Freedom of Speech he digressed,
“Kid, the fines $300.00, and you can pay by cash or check.”
I woke up late the next morning and it was my 2nd Independence Day.
Trumped up charges, out $300.00, but letting her down was my worst disgrace.
And I guess I hoped to avoid her, but as luck would have it we met face-to-face.
And when I swore I’d never ever see old Low again, she whispered, “I know another place!”
Chorus:
Then she told me ‘bout her dreams untold, angels of gold, and castles that float to the sky.
And she said, “In this world if you believe in yourself, then that’s all that you need to get by.
Cause the rest is easy enough, it’s just like falling in love.
You just open your wings and fly high.
Yeah, the rest is easy enough and you know, you just open your wings and fl
